WESTTOWN SCHOOL PLAYSCAPE

West Chester, PA

This project reimagined the playground at Westtown’s Lower School to transform it into an active, nature-filled play space. Throughout this project, our team engaged with students, faculty, and the surrounding community to be a part of the design process and develop their school’s unique play culture.

The new playscape is filled with plenty of swinging and climbing opportunities spread across the site to encourage a variety of movement types while playing together with friends or solo. Two large play houses sit in a central sand zone, with logs, stumps, and hammocks to support imaginative and sensory play. Vast swaths of lush planting through hills and rain gardens get the children up close with nature.

The steep slope in the middle of the site allows for two levels of play, connected by boulder paths, a slide, and a two-story treehouse. The treehouse consists of several nets and a large lookout platform for students to climb, rest, and socialize around the school’s beloved oak tree.
