OMAHA RIVERFRONT PLAYGROUNDS

Omaha, NE

Community leaders from Omaha and Council Bluffs are working together with government officials and stakeholders to improve both sides of the Missouri River. OJB Landscape Architecture developed a master plan for areas in and around Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park, and Lewis and Clark Landing in Omaha. We partnered with OJB on a 0.75 acre play area in Gene Leahy Mall and a 2 acre play area in Lewis and Clark Landing.

The Gene Leahy Mall play area is envisioned as an urban oasis for locals and tourists alike. It has a fractured ribbon of decking that acts as a ‘play spine’, warping up and down to reveal a rope forest, slides, climbing cave, and tunnels. Play arches leap across the ribbon, as climbable bridges from one play area to the next.

The Lewis and Clark Landing play area is a more immersive nature play experience. It evokes the local loess hill formations with a series of bermed play features topped with massive 30-50’ tall climbing towers, full of nets, hammocks, and slides. Sand and water play are a central feature.
