Elwyn Early Learning Services (ELS) provides Preschool Early Intervention services in Philadelphia County & the city of Chester. Reaching approximately 10,000 children each year, their Preschool Early Intervention services help children with developmental delays and disabilities to reach their individual goals.

Our team designed outdoor play spaces for two of their centers, in West and North Philadelphia. The focus was on immersive natural spaces that were fully accessible to children that utilize mobility devices.

We used natural wood structures, along with water and music elements for sensory rich play experiences. We surrounded the play spaces with native plants to attract pollinators and encourage interactions with nature. We created small undulations in the surface, along with a short race track for trikes, to provide opportunities for gross motor and big body movements.

Shade was essential for child and caretaker comforts, and we also included a number of benches for educators to sit with children and have quiet play or read together.
