COMMUNITY DESIGN BUILD

Philadelphia, PA

Note: Our director developed this project as a Volunteer with Public Workshop.

Play and learning go hand in hand. We love partnering with educators, schools, care programs, and providers to imagine how play can support their work. We take STEAM outdoors, make it messy, interactive, and most importantly, fun.

At Nebinger School, we helped transform a rain garden into a playful outdoor space. We worked with kids through their Outdoor Club to recognize the importance of rain gardens, through plant identification and leaf printing; we explored how to make fences beautiful, with parabolic line art and stick sculptures; and we discovered local habitats through species identification and bird house construction, decoration, and grid transfer.

At Public Workshop we empowered young adults to 'hack' their learning/studio space to better meet their artistic production and entrepreneurship needs. Through a 3 week design/build intensive, the students discovered the art of rapid prototyping with wood and zip ties, learned how to use power tools such as drills, jigsaws, and chopsaws, and worked collaboratively to design and build an indoor treehouse/computer lab/art gallery/hangout space.
